BlockIt service for opera

by shoust

BlockIt compilation of userjs for opera. Specify your userjs folder to begin.

This is a Unite Application with a difference! If anyone is familiar with NoScript, an extension for Firefox, then BlockIt will be right up their alley!

What is BlockIt?
It was mainly a User JavaScript specifically designed to selectively block or unblock specific JavaScript's on pages.
Using cookies for storage it was a basic but helpful way to block what was wanted, but the problem was that:

  1. It was only accurate if the page's code didn't change so often
  2. Storage was limited and it didn't work across multiple websites

Along then came more features before it was officially named "BlockIt",like allowing more resources on the page to be blocked/unblocked apart from scripts on the page, and measures to automatically allow scripts based on the website itself to run.
Then Opera Unite came along and I eventually figured out a way, to edit the User JavaScript, directly!
That way I wouldn't need to use cookies anymore or other methods to store settings.

What does it do?

It can selectively block almost any resource on the page! Almost any plugin, html iframe, script or image on the page(off by default) by their hostname or url, theres a guide in the application which gives you a run-down of everything you need to know to run it.
Basics are:
  1. Click '#X#' button to block items, '#[]#' to unblock items.
  2. Click 'All' to block/unblock all items.
  3. Click 'Host' to block/unblock by the resource's hostname.

Enjoy

Changelog:

1.1
-Added "videoblock" setting to Config page.
-Updated for it to work with Opera 10.5

so user unfriendly. i just want to block scripts. is that so much to ask? with blockit running, all scripts are disabled. I block, entry added dialog, i unblock, entry removed dialog. no change in scripts. the program can't even be quit without an opera restart. no quit funciton? really? is this torture engineered or accidental?

it would seem that development has ceased, or at least lapsed for a long while.

shame. such potential.

doesn't work when installed, can't uninstall. keep getting the same error, and there is no support forum anywhere. it's quite likely i'm f-ing something up seeing as i'm brand new to opera, but the lack of both support and comprehensible install instructions/solutions to bugs is veyr frustrating.

First of all, I want to express that I highly appreciate the fact, that the first steps towards a NoScript equivalent for Opera have been made, where one can selectively de-/activate individual scripts.

One of the reasons why one might want to have control over this, may be to stay out of the way of certain malicious code/threats.

But an additional reason may be, that you want to keep the possibilites of being e.g. tracked at a minimum; let's just take this annoying "I like it"-Facebook Button as an example; leaving (Flash) cookies, persistent storage (DOM) aside as it's a topic of it's own.

This leads to the question, why it has to be a Unite application, where I have to log into a service/server to make use of it? Is it solely because of the ease of installing it?

Anyhow, as stated before, I really do appreciate the first steps being made. I really do enjoy Opera as my primary browser a lot, and recommend it quite a bunch. I could imagine that more users could be more easily convinced of the switch over to this fine piece of software if let's say the "GUI" of BlockIt wouldn't suffer that much from the user scipts limitations.

So I'm having trouble uninstalling.

I've deleted the application from my Unite application list and from the thrash, but the icon keeps coming up and resources keep on being blocked.

How can I actually uninstall it?

This is so nearly a great Unite App, but the cryptic interface is getting in the way - please keep working on the implementation, as it is a great idea.

excellent, shoust! :D
This nifty Unite app effectively blocking most non-image ads that actually based on JScript.

I'd rather agree to member lilmoder. Perhaps start with something small like reworking the Blockit icon to match more modern-looking Opera's iconset?

nice thank you!!

Hahahaha, I just noticed that there's the Internet Explorer from that one Firefox commercial in the video on the guide page.

Also, I am having difficulty using this service. Probably has something to do with me using Opera 10.51. It would be nice if this were updated to work under Opera 10.51. I'll be keeping this disabled until then.

By Quadunit404, # Mar 24, 2010 8:09:57 PM

Turns out I won't be able to use this app for now.

It seems that it breaks most sites with dynamic content, and makes nearly all video sites not load. It's too much of a hassle to keep whitelisting all these sites that should work.

:frown:

Shoust just letting you know that this single handedly has the potential to convert 1000s of Firefox users! Automatic and easy adblocking is probably their #1 complaint about Opera, and this Unite app fixes it!

Please, don't ever stop working on this!

Design of User Interface need to be improved. Especially toolbar. Why cryptic "#X#", not just "disabled" , "enabled" ? Probably also right bottom as default will be better, and more similar to NoScript.

Also config page is why to overloaded, make it smaller, smaller vertical spaces, adjust to left, allign checkbox to left, and will be much better.

By movax, # Mar 10, 2010 4:51:20 AM

nice!

By samMD, # Mar 8, 2010 11:13:40 PM

BlockIt launcher button SHOULDN'T be located in the field of web page. This Unite app could provide ability to add launcher button as Opera's UI button. You could make this thing look better and more user friendly.

By lilmoder, # Mar 8, 2010 5:12:32 PM

Also, can we get blocking based on a part of a domain, like ytimg.com for example? Thanks!

By garaden, # Mar 5, 2010 4:00:27 AM

Cool so far! If something like this didn't exist, I would have had to move to Firefox once I realized how big a problem injection is... one thing though: can we get synchronization between machines? NoScript somehow does it using a bookmark; that would go great with Opera Link.

By garaden, # Mar 5, 2010 3:39:47 AM

If the "inverseblock" setting is turned on, anything that is about to be unblocked will be removed from the list, while if its off, anything about to be blocked will be removed from the list, etc.
